Make Friendship Circle Your
Bar/bat mitzvah project
WHAT IS IT?
We’re excited to present the Friendship Circle UES Bar/Bat Mitzvah Project! A wonderful opportunity for 11, 12 & 13 year old boys and girls to celebrate their coming of age milestone by engaging with kids who have special needs. The project includes a wholesome blend of training, volunteering and fundraising.
In the scope of 4 sessions, the group explores pertinent themes such as what the different disabilities are and the challenges that our friends face, the Jewish perspectives on inclusion, how we should view individuals with special needs, what to do in challenging situations and more. The four 1-hour sessions will be led by the FC Directors, Sara & Shlomo Gutnick. Girls led by Sara, boys by Shlomo.
Participants are immediately given the opportunity to put what they learn into practice by volunteering at the Sunday Circle program. Sunday Circle is one of Friendship Circle’s flagship programs for children with special needs. Kids are dropped off in the hands of loving volunteers and qualified professionals for two hours of fun, entertainment, creativity, and social interaction. Numerous activities are on offer, including music, art, baking, sports, bounce house and facilitated sensory play. Each child is paired up with a volunteer buddy. Kids are ages 4 – 15 and Volunteers are ages 11 – 17. Our Bar and Bat Mitzvah group volunteer at 5 Sunday Circles during which they are typically paired up with a younger child and an older volunteer.
The tremendous impact that Friendship Circle UES has is only possible with the generous support of the community. People are accustomed to giving and receiving monetary gifts in honor of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, the fundraising element of this project is an opportunity to make those gifts even more meaningful. We have three options for participants to choose from and are here to assist every step of the way.
1. Invite family and friends to make a donation to Friendship Circle UES in lieu of Bar/Bat Mitzvah gifts with a dedicated webpage on the Friendship Circle website and a fundraising goal.
2. Dedicate a portion or all of your monetary gifts received for your Bar/Bat Mitzvah to the Friendship Circle program of your choice.
3. Create your own fundraising event
